san francisco artist justine lai is in the midst of what i think is a fantastic project: she is painting herself having sex with every u.s president, in chronological order. i love the idea of this so much more than i probably should. and that link is nsfw. Read the rest of this entry »

i know. i’m supposed to be a part of the blogosphere, right? sharing my thoughts and opinions with the internet and letting it all out into the ether. so, why haven’t i bothered to write anything recently? because i’m in a rut. cranky, a little depressed, sick of the weather here and generally unsatisfied with my existence of late. take that, twitscape! the website catherine’s animals has elegantly minimalist photographs of animals taken by catherine ledner. they feature ornate backgrounds and flooring, as if the creatures have just stopped over for tea and polite conversation. if i had any extra cash right now, i’d be supporting this utterly random art form.

tom gauld makes really great illos for the guardian newspaper. the cinderella one is one of my favorites.

after waiting with bated breath for weeks (not really), a large envelope showed up in the mail with my sailing certificates and official american sailing association membership card. that’s right, people. it’s official: i have “demonstrated an abiding interest in sailing” by completing courses “approved by the national association of state boating law administrators and the u.s. coast guard” … whatever that means. you know how sometimes people ask you to do things that you (a) have no interest in, (b) are not particularly good at and (c) would rather be taken care of my someone who knows what’s what? Read the rest of this entry »

while i was cleaning today, i came a across a magazine article from 2007 that i ripped out of an in-flight magazine and saved because the writer, in describing herself, summed up exactly how i view myself and the predicaments i find myself in most of the time. Read the rest of this entry »

so, i’m new to this whole blogging thing and i’d like to get better at it. or, at least, have a better understanding of how it works and why, efficiency, tracking readership and the whole nine. i was hoping the public library would help. unfortunately, every book about blogging published since 2002 in most of the branches of the denver public library system is checked out. wtf?! in these difficult economic times, the man and i are trying to cut our expenses and put some money into savings. with only one of us pulling in a regular income, this could prove interesting. Read the rest of this entry »

the man let me bleach his hair blonde on a whim.
we were shopping at target. as we walked past the hair care aisle i said, “maybe you should dye your hair.” expecting him to give me a weird look and say “no way!”, he surprised me with an enthusiastic “sure!” he chose the color and, as soon as we got back home, we set out to make him a blonde.

you how sometimes you look at your significant other and think, “wow. i’m lucky” and smile? i am fortunate enough to get that feeling often. it’s love but a bit better, i think. it’s adoration. he tries so hard to make me happy, usually succeeding. he’s mostly unselfish and patient and kind.
i do adore him and all his weirdness. everyday, not just on valentine’s day.

sailing was way more intense than i expected. 7 days in the caribbean bouncing around the virgin islands sounds like cake but the water was “heavy” with north swells pretty much the whole time. handling a 43-foot sailboat is a ton of work: trimming sails, helming, navigating, tacking, jibing, points of sail, docking, mooring, anchoring, right of way, man overboard drills … my brain has been jammed full with so much information it’s mush. if you’re going, here are a few highlights:
nice dinner: asolare is a small restaurant on a hilltop overlooking cruz bay. popular for sunset seatings.
hotel: the westin st. john is nicely away from the tourist center and has it’s own small beach and activities center. two restaurants, a small deli and a nice pool with fun bar area.
beach: trunk bay has flour-soft sand overlooking turquoise caribbean waters. the park service charges $4 for access. it gets crowded so arrive early.
snorkeling sights: waterlemon bay is a near-mile hike from the road but worth every step. secluded and tranquil with lots of underwater life to see, especially near the small waterlemon cay in the center.

i admit that the flights we chose weren’t ideal. we were ending a blissful vacation by going from st. thomas to san juan to miami to denver. never again.
if the airlines expect passengers to shell out more money for fewer flights and less no service and charge us to handle bags, i expect the airlines to show some improvement. where’s all that extra money going? Read the rest of this entry »

every time i fly i am reminded that as air travel becomes more affordable, it resembles more and more a greyhound bus in the sky. manners disappear and the shoving starts. adults traveling in what look like pajamas with filthy pillows they brought from home. small children wander the aisle barefoot, stuffing what looks like sticky food into their mouths and then touching every seat they pass. we leave for the virgin islands tomorrow for two weeks: one week sailing and one week vacation.

i laid around all day watching inauguration coverage. i have to admit, i didn’t believe he’d actually won back in november. the whole thing was so surreal. watching him take the oath made it real. watching bush shrink into the distance in a helicopter bound for whogivesadamnhesfinallygone made it real-er. hearing michelle introduced as the first lady made it real-est.
dang! we did it!
ps/ the image is a little diptych i came up with from two random pics that hit my inbox this week. silly? yes. but cool as hell too.

my best friend recently had a baby. i went to visit and she revealed to me that her four-year marriage is probably over. i’m still having a hard time getting my head around what she said. he seemed like such a great guy. and why get yourself all pregnant if you think it’s not working out. hope springs eternal, i guess. as a freelancer, i spent half my time educating clients about what good design is. most of them take my advice and give me a fair amount of creative license. but there are those that, no matter what i say, insist that they know more than me when it comes to what looks good. i was just reading an article about facebook banning photos of women breastfeeding. while i generally think breastfeeding is a good idea — since that’s what boobs are really for after all — i cannot support a bunch of militant moms who want to use photos of them nursing as their profile pics. what ever happened to discretion?
facebook also bans images of the “gluteal cleft.” i had to look that up since the article didn’t bother to define it. simply, it’s butt crack. hey, i learned something today.

i signed the booking agreement for sailing today. it’s a week-long course that covers everything from sail handling to reading charts to anchoring to provisioning. this officially starts the ball rolling on our fantastic sailing adventure plans. Read the rest of this entry »

i wear shoes most of my waking hours because it is more comfortable for me. if your carpet or flooring is so important to you that you don’t want it walked on, hang it on the wall, don’t spread it on the ground. i would never ever require a guest in my home to be uncomfortable just to protect my stuff. i think it’s rude.
